Collage and mixed media present an interesting challenge and a unique opportunity to create narrative without losing the plot, to abstract and represent. When I start out on a blank panel, I have no idea where the piece will go. I add collage, paint, marks and then reflect, looking at where edges seem to communicate or elements want to come forward and others recede. Sometimes forms appear. The rabbit was unplanned, but as soon as I saw it and gave it a bit more shape, other elements made themselves clear, especially the birthing woman in the lower left, so overpowered by the rabbit, and the moon shapes. The moons transit the sky, moving above the grounded forms, the inescapable reality of the feminine body, fertility, and its impact on our lives.
